History of The Telephone

The invention
Alexander Graham Bell, a Scottish-born inventor, scientist, and engineer, was the telephone inventor. He came to the US as a teacher, and while in the US, the idea of creating a device to communicate came to his mind. He had sought a way to transmit speech electronically. In 1980, a lab was set up to improve his invention. By improving his vision, he successfully made a photophone, an instrument that could send sound on a beam of light. With this, Bell was successful in making history’s first wireless call, equally important this changed the history of the telephone forever.
The First Telephone Office
The first telephone office was established in New York on March 18, 1878. The first coast-to-coast phone call was developed in 1915. This was the first long-distance call from a landline phone in history. This call made long-distance calling a reality.
In 1927, the first telephone service was set up from the US to the UK. The first phones were radio phones, which had fading and interference issues. The phone calls with these radio phones were expensive, which cost as much as nearly $10 for three minutes.
In 1934, the first radiotelephone call was made from the US to Japan, facilitating communication across the Pacific Ocean which marked another achievement in history. It was 1936 when Bell labs started researching electronic telephone exchange, which led to the development of electronic switching systems (ESS). In 1946, the first commercial cell phone service was launched using radio wave technology, and in the same year, a transistor was invented by Bell Laboratories. When the telephone was emerging as a necessity for every household globally, fiber-optic cables helped to handle a massive volume of calls.
What is a Radiotelephone?
A radiotelephone (or radiophone), abbreviated RT, is a radio communication system for the transmission of speech over radio. Radiotelephony means the transmission of sound (audio) by radio, in contrast to radiotelegraphy, which is the transmission of telegraph signals, or television, the transmission of moving pictures and sound. From the 1980s to the present, we have witnessed a massive advancement in technology. From basic devices to wifi capable smartphones, from calling someone or receiving calls to using smartphones to navigate places and learning new things, phones have come a long way.
